1. Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX – Best Hiking Shoes
For a long time, Salomon’s X Ultra series of hiking shoes are our favorite, suitable for a variety of purposes from everyday to lightweight backpacking.
The X Ultra 3 is both lightweight and flexible, with a good padding at the insole and tongue, and the insole provides sufficient cushioning and support.
Admittedly, the grip of the old X Ultra 2 is already very good, but we are more satisfied with the new Contagrip outsole, whether it is traveling in soft soil, hard stone road or heavy snow, it performs well.
Even more surprising is that the rubber sole does not deteriorate or chip even after a long hike on the granite.
Due to the good waterproof design, the breathability of the shoes is not very good. This problem is not obvious in cold weather, but if you are traveling in warm weather, you may feel a little hot.
2. Merrell Moab 2 – Best Budget Hiking Shoes
When you wear Merrell Moab 2, you will realize why this shoe is so popular.
The insole and tongue have a soft cushion, a support insole and an extra padding on the heel for surprising foot protection.
Designed for hikers, Moab 2 offers modest support and stability. Compared to training running shoes, this shoe is not suitable for walking on rough terrain.
Two silicone bands are added to the inside and outside of the upper to provide more stability and reduce the risk of ankle sliding.
The reliable outsole has a long service life and provides good traction on rocks and dirt roads, and feels good on soft soil.
Moab 2 has a lot of mesh along the sides and top, so the breathability is very good, but the waterproof model has a great influence on the breathability.
The North Face has been promoted in the hiking market and the Ultra GTX series is one of our favorite products.
Those who prefer lightweight and flexible may prefer the Salomon X Ultra 3, but The North Face is a better choice for heavy loads and technical routes.
The viscous rubber of the Ultra 110 GTX grips very well on the rock, and its good flexibility is suitable for a variety of soft and hard surfaces.
It has a fairly rigid heel that is robust enough for long walks and heavy packaging, and also helps provide safety on steep slopes and uneven roads, but not ideal for fast moving.
Good water resistance and a thick upper are good for wet and cold weather, but breathability is not ideal.
If you are a hiking enthusiast, the Ultra 110 is a reliable hiking partner.
Adidas has grown in the world of hiking shoes and has released the latest version of the Terrex Swift series.
In terms of overall design, Terrex Swift feels stiff, including a rough sole and a tough upper, but the comfort is not reduced.
Both smoothness and comfort are quite good, but the hard design is not suitable for training or strenuous exercise, which can damage our toes.
It is also very protective on both sides and is fitted with a molded TPU toe cap. In addition, there is more rubber along the arch area, creating additional protection on the inside and outside.
Similar to Salomon, Adidas uses a fast lacing system in its Swift lineup called Lace Bungee, which allows you to tie your shoelace once in a quick workout.
5. La Sportiva TX3 – Best Hiking Shoes For Summer
From a large number of trails and rocks to areas filled with snow, the La Sportiva TX3 is a loyal and reliable companion.
If you do climbing often, it won’t let you down. The sole is coated with viscous rubber under the toes for stable attachment to the rock.
In fact, the TX3 is probably one of the most comfortable hiking shoes we have ever seen. The rounded bulge of the sole can be placed against rock or snow, and the heel effectively helps to walk on loose ground.
What makes me happy is that the mesh upper can generate a lot of airflow, which is very suitable for wearing in the hot summer.
The TX3 is not waterproof, but it is very light and breathable, so it can dry quickly after getting wet.
For many years, Keen’s Targhee collection has been a leader in the hiking footwear category.
Targhee III will make your feet feel relaxed and the detachable insole is of high quality.
This shoe is waterproofed with Keen Dry technology and is water resistant.
But the breathability is relatively poor. If you are hiking in a warm environment for a long time, Targhee III may make your feet warm up faster.
Leather uppers are prone to scratches on rocks and branches, but overall durability still performs well. The same is true for the midsole and outsole: both are strong.
When you put on MQM Flex, you can immediately feel that it is completely different from Moab 2. The padding around the heel is very thin and even feels like a pair of running shoes.
The MQM Flex is light and flexible, with low height differences, and there are enough protections to travel at night or run.
But if you are climbing or walking on rough terrain, you may want to stick to more cushioned shoes like Moab 2 or Salomon X Ultra 3.
The grip of the shoes is ok, but not very good, which is acceptable for most hiking and regular short trips.
In terms of stability and support, MQM Flex is more reliable than most hiking shoes. The heel is quite strong, but it doesn’t have the wide shoe lasts and the ground feel like the Moab 2.
The breathability of the shoes is very good, but we found that the walking temperature of MQM is slightly higher than Moab 2, but it is still very suitable for summer adventure.
Comfort is the most popular side of the shoe, and the thick midsole gives it plenty of flexibility, and the soft tongue and upper material provide just the right amount of comfort.
Another highlight is the light weight, which is more flexible because it is lighter than most hiking shoes.
Traction is not satisfactory, and although the sole has tight bumps, we often slip when walking in the canyon. On muddy and soft ground, the rubber compound sole lacks a tight fit on steep sections.
If you are a runner, Salomon Odyssey Pro may be perfect for you, light and breathable, even if you don’t feel tired for hours.
Odyssey Pro only produces non-waterproof models, and a large number of meshes on the upper give it excellent breathability.
The material on the upper is almost entirely mesh, and the flat laces look thinner and may give you less confidence, but there is no indication that they are excessively worn.
The Vasque Grand Traverse mixes light and flexible construction, making it ideal for deserted deserts.
Traction is the advantage of this shoe, and when we travel on a variety of rock surfaces, there is very little slippage. In addition, its support for rock climbing is also very good.
Simple design with a lower Vibram outsole and EVA midsole. When we are hiking or climbing, we will fully feel the footprints and rocks under our feet.
Surprisingly, despite the low ankle height, we found the Grand Traverse to be fairly stable, which may benefit from their unique lacing system, extending from the toe to the toe. The shoes are very even on the feet and tightly tightened, making the ankles very strong.
We think this non-waterproof shoe is designed for the desert and it is very breathable. The plush leather upper is slim and light, and the mesh on the sides and top performs well in terms of heat dissipation.
Although Salewa is not a household name, the company has a large following in the climbing community and Alpine enthusiasts.
Similar to many competitors, Salewa uses the Vibram sole, which is the same except for the key climbing areas of the shoe.
Firetail 3 has excellent traction and the shoe lasts larger and rounder for superior comfort.
The lacing system is one of its highlights, the laces extend from the toe close to the ankle to the toes and can be fine-tuned for a more comfortable fit.
Overall, we think Firetail 3 is a good balance of weight and performance. The lightweight and flexible design helps you carry it around, and the non-waterproof model will weigh less.
